Whether you dream in color or dream of running off to the circus, the Altadena Library has something for you during the month of November. Ink portraits on canvas by Katy Unger are displayed in the community room in an exhibit titled “We Dream in Color” and “Marckmann’s Big Top,” a collection of O-gauge train cars, will be in the main room.
All aboard for the Big Top!
The circus train was created by Altadenan Otto Marckmann and is on loan from his daughter, artist Karen Bagnard, and her daughter Chelsea Bagnard. The train ran at the Los Angeles County Fair on the Citrus Empire Model Railroad Club tracks under the grandstand from the late 1950s until the late 1970s.
“This miniature train is a replica of the famous Depression-era circus trains that laced their way across America entertaining crowds from the big cities to the isolated rural towns,” Bagnard writes. “A painting contractor by trade and a model railroader by heart, he loved running his trains for family, friends and model railroad fans that visited the Los Angeles County Fair each year.”
She urges folks to “bring your "inner child" and any other kids you can round up and see this whimsical train filled with wild animals, trainers, acrobats, clowns and barkers!”
Katy Unger exhibits “We Dream in Color”
Unger’s ink portraits on canvas are inspired by “the fleeting moments on the edge of sleep or consumed by fantasy when there exists a subtle overlap between fiction and reality.”
Her subjects are realistically portrayed, but she reveals their emotions as drips of color trailing over the surface of the art. She calls this “a connection between the conscious and subconscious” and “a balance between control and chance.”
Unger lives and creates out of her studio in Los Angeles. Media include painting, illustration, mixed media and stop-motion animation.
Altadena Library is located at 600 E. Mariposa St. at Santa Rosa Ave. For more information, call (626) 798-4033.
