Like many of you, I play several lotteries on a reasonable monthly budget.  My strategy has always been to get tickets online through an agent (I personally use thelotter.com because they're the biggest in the world).  Lotto agents should maintain a physical presence in the games they support.

If they don't, don't use them!  Or you risk not getting paid by the national lottery organization (if they require a physical presence to play).  Also, check to see if your agent notifies you in case you win.  Agents also store a scanned copy of your ticket for safekeeping, which serves as a kind of insurance.  I don't want to be in a nightmare situation like the sanitation worker who won the $245 million Powerball jackpot on November 2 only to lose his ticket!

By going to the internet, I benefit in three ways:

  1. It's more efficient.  I probably save between two to four hours each month in commute time and by avoiding lines at grocery counters (and don't forget gas money).  On an annualized basis, that amounts to between 24 to 48 hours in time savings!
  2. Second, I can shop for better odds of winning the jackpot by comparing games.  One lottery may have a superior offering of a large $50 million prize with fewer players.  Why compete with a crowded drawing?
  3. Finally, I can monitor the week's largest jackpots (say EuroMillions or Powerball) and decide if I want to participate in those.

What would you do if you won a $10 million jackpot?  Feel free to share your lottery dreams in the comments section below.  I know I would: (1) pay off my debts, (2) take care of my family, (3) make someone else's dream come true, and (4) travel the world to see ancient monuments.
