Based on Ben Sherwood's best-selling novel, The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, the film Charlie St. Cloud stars Zac Efron as a sailor who wins a boat race with his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) and earns a sailing scholarship to Stanford University. After his high school graduation, he promises his brother that they will play baseball together every day until he leaves for Stanford. However one night while his mother Claire (Kim Basinger) is working, they are involved in a horrible car accident which prematurely ends Sam's life in Charlie's arms, despite paramedic Florio Ferrente's (Ray Liotta) efforts. At Sam's funeral, Charlie is overwhelmed by grief and runs off. He meets Sam's spirit and keeps his promise to his brother by playing baseball with him at sunset each day.

Five years have passed and Charlie is now the caretaker at the cemetery where Sam is buried. He had given up on his bright future at Stanford in order to keep his promise to his brother. One day in town near the boat docks, he meets sailor Tess Carroll (Amanda Crew), who dreams of one day sailing around the world. As they develop a relationship and grow closer, Sam feels he is losing Charlie when he arrives late for their daily baseball game.

When Charlie finds out that Tess has gone missing while sailing through a storm, he must choose between his love for Tess and his love for his brother Sam. Florio, who is dying of cancer, believes there is a reason Charlie is still alive and was blessed with such a wonderful gift, but will that be enough to help him make the right decision before it is too late for Tess?
