Unlike October which was very mild, November 2013 will be remembered as chilly, especially during the last week. The high temperatures were cooler than normal. The average high was 44.90° which is 2.39° below average. The low temperatures for the month were also below average. The average low temperature was 30.67° which is 2.34° below average. The average temperature for the month, which includes both the highs and lows, was 37.78°, 2.36° below average.
Precipitation, rain and melted snow, was observed on 22 of the 30 days. Even with all the moisture laden days precipitation was close to average for Grand Rapids. A total of 3.75 inches fell, which was 0.24 inches above average. While the first flakes of snow arrived in October, the first measurable snow fell on Veterans Day. Grand Rapids saw below average snowfall while the lakeshore observed above average snowfall, thanks to several big storms. One was on Sunday morning the 24th and another on Thanksgiving Day. For Grand Rapids the total snowfall was only 2.2 inches, which is 4.60 inches below average. Severe weather is rare in November but a powerful storm brought West Michigan the first confirmed tornado in since April 2011.
Even with all the soggy days, November was a sunny month with 34.0% of possible sunshine. In a typical October we see 28% so last month was 6% above average.
