Novartis AG new drug may provide relief for Juvenile Arthritis

Swiss drug manufacture demonstrates ACZ885 improves symptoms

According to Novartis researchers those enduring the most serious form of childhood arthritis may receive remarkable relief despite its recent delay in its application for gout.

On Friday Novartis AG a Swiss drug manufacture announced their new promising treatment for the most serious form of childhood arthritis. Relating that in a late-stage study the drug had out performed a placebo.

This new treatment which is not really new is called ACZ885 or llaris. It performs by blocking interieukin-1 beta (protein) associated to inflammation. It is currently being sold to treat a rare inflammation disorder called cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome, however, United States regulators had made the decision last month that they would not approve it just yet for gout.

The study had concentrated on patients who had systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA). This is a rare condition noted by possible life-long and recurrent arthritis flare-ups which could involve the fever, skin rash, joint pain and swelling.

Results had shown that 83.7% of the patients had shown at least 30% improvement in symptoms in comparison to 9.8% on placebo.  Among the patients 32.6 who had taken ACZ885 had shown one hundred percent in improvement.

Dr. Pierre from the Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris and one of the researchers had remarked that the study results had suggested that ACZ885 could become a valuable treatment option for children with SJIA.

The manufacturer has plans in 2012 to file for drug approval in the Unites States and Europe.

Researchers had noted they did not find any new safety findings and no patient had to discontinue treatment for adverse events. This study has met all primary and secondary end-points

Around 300,000 children in the United States have some form of juvenile arthritis. Besides medications some alternative therapies have been known to help relieve symptoms.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic care has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of arthritis and its symptoms both in genetic and non-genetic forms.

Chiropractic is based around the body has the ability to heal itself. Chiropractic corrections of the joint and spine leads to more range of motion in the body. Chiropractic can directly adjust the joints to decrease pain.

Spinal manipulations by a chiropractor can result in diminished pain by aiding the overall health. These results in greater ease in movement and a decrease of fluid build up in the joints that usually are present with arthritis.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective for several disease and conditions among them arthritis. Acupuncture diminishes pain by releasing tight, spasmed, shorter muscles to their relaxed state. It also aides in regulating the body’s nervous system which can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killer.

Reflexology

Reflexology treats arthritis by stimulating the nerves in the hands and feet resulting in decreased pain and improved mobility. Reflexology has no side effects therefore it is good in the treatment of arthritis. Many patients use it to decrease pain and stiffness. Reflexology is beneficial in children.
