It looks like Novak Djokovic is gearing up for another great season of tennis and he is starting out by making a surprise announcement. It was just reported on the Djokovic official website on Dec. 18 that he has hired tennis legend Boris Becker to be his new head coach. This was quite an unexpected, but smart move to take on such a big name in tennis history.
The Australian Open begins next month and the world number two player is looking to grab his fifth title in this tournament. Will Becker help him do that? Djokovic seems to think so as he has expressed his excitement on having the 46-year-old former player as part of his team.
“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Boris. He is a true legend, someone who has great tennis knowledge and his experience will help me win new trophies from the Grand Slams and other tournaments,” Djokovic said. “Becker is a great person, too, and I am sure he will fit in our team in the best possible way. Boris brings new fresh approach, and together with Vajda, he will make a winning combination.”
Marian Vajda has been a part of the team for seven years now and this agreement to have Becker as head coach seems to be the best decision to improve Djokovic’s game for the upcoming year. It sounds like adding another member as talented as Boris Becker has been in his tennis career may give him the energetic boost that he needs to grab the number one title once again. Rafael Nadal currently holds that number one spot in tennis.
Becker says that he will do his best to help the 26-year-old tennis player achieve his goals of playing his best tennis in 2014. The German is the youngest player ever to win Wimbledon and has six Grand Slam singles titles under his belt, so he definitely has some insights into the game to possibly put Djokovic back into the lead.
The duo will be hitting the court hard as Becker starts preparing the Serbian for the Australian Open which begins on Jan. 13.
