This is the second article of this series, which began here. We will be discussing Major Chakra #1, the Muladhara Chakra. The Muladhara (“Root Location”) Chakra is located at the base of the spine, at the genital-anal level. The Color is Red, and the Mantra is Lam (pronounced “Lahm”). You will notice, as we proceed through the Seven Major Chakras, that the color scheme follows the rainbow. The traditional Earth Element Symbol or Yantra is, however, Prithivi, which is a yellow square. The sacred Number is 4, and this Chakra is also depicted as a four-petalled lotus.
It is said that the Kundalini (“coiled”) Energy is here at the Base chakra; it is pictured as a coiled serpent, ready to be released. This Form of Cosmic Energy is within everyone. In Tantric Yoga, through a series of exercises involving posture, meditation, and breathing, a practitioner can cause this energyto move up through the body to the top of the head. This brings about a sensation of bliss, as the ordinary self becomes One with the Eternal Self. The Caduceus is a Western symbol for this very concept. The Inner Guardian is poised to protect the most precious Treasure.
Muladhara is also the base from which begin the three nadis (“channels”): the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. These will be discussed in a later article, after we finish discussing with the Seven Major Chakras.
The Muladhara is associated with the element Earth, the densest grade of manifestation. It is described as having four petals, corresponding to:
1. The psychological states of greatest joy
2. Natural pleasure
3. Delight in controlling passions, and
4. Blissfulness in concentration.
In other words, this is the bliss of realizing the Divine within the physical body. It is important, when meditating on the Root chakra, not to reject the body, but to celebrate it as a part of the whole of one’s existence. The connection with the excretory system should be obvious. In Nova Thought, this Root Chakra is correlated to the Stone Principle.
The next article will deal with the Svadhisthana Chakra.
