Fort Hood and surrounding communities have planned several memorial ceremonies to mark the tragic shooting's one-year anniversary:
Friday, November 5th, Fort Hood will host an awards ceremony to recognize more than 54 soldiers and civilians whose actions Nov. 5 went beyond the call of duty. The invitation only event is expected to draw more than 100 relatives of the fallen.
A remembrance ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday at Fort Hood's Cameron Field is open to the public. After the event, a moment of silence and a post-wide retreat ceremony will be conducted.
The City of Killeen at 4:30 p.m. Friday, will unveil an artist's rendering of a Nov. 5 memorial garden at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
Run to Remember: November 6th, Saturday, Fort Hood will hold the Run to Remember, a 13.1-mile half-marathon organized by Jessica Hansen, fiancée of injured shooting victim Patrick Zeigler.
The run is open to the public and kicks off at 8 a.m. To register for the run or the accompanying five-kilometer run or one- mile walk, go to www.hoodmwr.com. Registration fee is $15, or $20 the day of the run.
Rock the Hood: At noon Saturday, Fort Hood will host Rock the Hood, a concert at Sadowski Field that is free and open to the public. Two stages will feature performers including Elvis Crespo, Puddle of Mudd, 7 Years Today and Nas. The event also will have free carnival rides and arts and crafts for kids.
Examiners Note: A fund has been set up to help pay for rehabilitation expenses for SSG Patrick Zeigler who was severely injured that day. He has endured several surgeries, including multiple brain surgeries, since the incident and has required extended occupational and physical therapy. While he has made remarkable progress he still has a long road ahead of him. Some of his expenses are covered by the Army:
