Today Dec 18th, 2009 the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released data of the state and regional unemployment rates for November 2009.
As the November national unemployment rate(U-3) fell to 10% from 10.2% in October, the state unemployment rates reflected a downward movement as well. 36 states (72% of the country) and the District of Columbia reported a decrease in their unemployment rates, 8 states reported an increase and 6 states did not see a change in unemployment.
Highest unemployment rates (seasonally adjusted) included: MI 14.7%; RI 12.7%; CA, NV and SC 12.3%; DC 11.8%; FL 11.5%; OR 11.1%, IL 10.9%; NC 10.8%.
Lowest unemployment rates (seasonally adjusted) included: ND 4.1%; NE 4.5%; SD 5.0%; KS and UT 6.3%; MT and VT 6.4%; VA 6.6%; IA, LA and NH 6.7%.
Largest decreases in monthly unemployment rates (seasonally adjusted) included: KY and LA -0.7%; CT and NV -0.6%; AL, AZ, KS, MI, NE, NY and PA -0.4%
Largest increases in monthly unemployment rates (seasonally adjusted) included: SC 0.3%; MO and FL 0.2%.
NY, NJ and CT respectively reported 8.6%, 9.7% and 8.2% unemployment rates.
Large Metro Areas
There are 49 large metropolitan areas (population of 1 million or more based on 2000 census). Currently the data is for October 2009.
Large metropolitan areas with the lowest unemployment rates included (not seasonally adjusted):
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria , DC-VA-MD-WV = 6.2%
Oklahoma City, OK =6.5%
Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC = 6.5%
Denver- Aurora-Broomfield, CO =6.8%
Large metro areas with the highest unemployment rates included (not seasonally adjusted):
Detroit- Warren-Livonia, MI = 16.7%
Riverside- San Bernadino-Ontario, CA = 14.6%
Las Vegas-Paradise, NV = 13.0%
New York-Northern NJ-Long Island, ranked 26th = 9.1% unemployment.
Chicago-Naperville-Joliet ranked 32 = 10.3% unemployment.
NY City October unemployment rate was reported at 10.3%.
