Notre Dame proves too much for Lady Blue Devils

GREENSBORO – Notre Dame was just too good for the rest of the ACC in its first season in the conference.

Jewell Loyd poured in 26 points and Kayla McBride added 25 as the Irish blew past defending champion Duke 69-53 in the championship game of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday night at Greensboro Coliseum.

No. 2 ranked Notre Dame (32-0) became the first team that was not in the ACC in 1955 to win the women’s tournament. It was the Irish’s third victory over No. 10 Duke (27-6) this season.

Haley Peters had 18 points and Elizabeth Williams 17 along with a season-high 16 rebounds for the second-seeded Blue Devils.

Notre Dame of course received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Duke is a lock for a high seed and will host first- and second-round games at Cameron Indoor Stadium March 22 and 24.
