Notre Dame College of Ohio claimed their second consecutive national mat title at the 2011 NAIA Wrestling National Championships at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Saturday night.
The Falcons had two national champions at opposite ends of the weight scale: 125-pound Dante Rini, and heavyweight Orlando Scales. Three additional NDC wrestlers placed second, which took the Falcons to the top of the team title race with 170 points.
Lindenwood of Missouri placed second with 141 points, with one individual champ (Chris Chionuma at 174 pounds); McKendree of Illinois was close behind with 138.5 points, and one champ (Wade Lowe at 133.)
Other schools with individual titlewinners included Great Falls (two champs), Grand View (1), Cumberland (1), Montana State-Northern (1), and Midland (1).
Among the awards presented at the 2011 NAIAs: Corey Bleaken of Cumberland in Tennessee was named Outstanding Wrestler of the championships and winner of the Gorriaran Award (most pins in shortest amount of time)... and NWCA/NAIA National Wrestler of the Year was Andrew Sanchez of McKendree.
