Nothing but the Blood - A Devotion

Nothing but the Blood
Nothing but the Blood

Romans 3:23-26 (NLT)
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

I shared this dream before but feel compelled to do so again. I cannot remember the exact timing but it was somewhere in the early stages of this battle against cancer. The cancer was in what we would soon find out to be dormancy rather than remission. I had a dream that the devil had taken our youngest daughter. He had one hand on her shoulder but when we called to her she came right to us, he could not hold her. I remember hurling scripture after scripture at him and he seemed unaffected. My regular language turned into a heavenly language as I continued. All of a sudden, he was no longer ten feet away but his hot breath was in my face so close I could smell a smoky acrid scent yet not touching me. He seethed at me, “I would have killed them all (my children) if it wasn’t for the Blood of Jesus!” Ever since that moment, I realized that the Power in the Blood of Jesus Christ is my life source. It is the only thing that keeps the enemy away from my family. The Lord knows that my children are my heart. He entrusted them to me and He knows that I would lay my life down for any one of them without hesitation. Unfortunately, the enemy also knows that my love for them far exceeds that for myself. It is all about the Blood. We have no chance at life except the cleansing power that is found in its flow. Yet who would even consider something as barbaric and swimming in such a pool. We must plead the Blood of Jesus Christ over ourselves and our loved ones each day. It is the only defense that we have against the enemy and his attacks. Yet, where is the Blood of Jesus today? We have wiped our church houses clean of the offensive mark. There is no mention of it in our pulpits as not to offend or detour those with finer sensibilities from leaving. We do not sing about it or even really talk about it. Maybe it is time for our churches to break open the hymnals, put down the electric guitar and turn off the light show to sing, “What can wash away my sin, nothing but the Blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again, nothing but the Blood of Jesus…”

Everyone has sinned. We fall short of God’s Glorious Standard of living. We do no decide the best course for our life, the Lord does so without His Blood we have no chance a better life and yes this would be all there is to living. But thankfully, God’s Love would not allow Him to leave us in such a state. He saw our sin but loved us so much more. Jesus is the sacrifice for our sin. It would be a life for a life. Jesus said, “Here take mine.” To believe in Jesus Christ is to give Him our life because He gave His Life for us. It is biblical.

Genesis 9:5-6 (NLT)
“And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.”

God requires a life for a life. Oh no, you might be thinking that is so Old Testament. Friend, Jesus Christ did not come to do away with God’s Law but fulfill it once and for all completely. “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the Law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.” (Matthew 5:17-18) Grace did not erase the Law of God but rather makes it just as if we never sinned which is justification. I think the problem in the church today that is trickling into the hearts and homes of believers is that it ignores the significance of the Blood of Jesus. Without this sacrifice, we do not stand a chance. His Blood ran backwards to capture the uncompromisingly righteous ones from the Old Testament and flows right through the New Testament into today. Jesus Christ is the same – yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Leviticus 17:11 (NLT)
“…for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORD. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life that makes purification possible.”

Our natural life is in our blood. Our eternal life is in the Blood of Jesus. We must choose our “life” source. Will we choose to remain subject to the body, flesh or sinful nature? Or will we choose to give up this life to have a “new life” in Jesus Christ? It is a life for a life. You cannot have both. A choice must be made. If you choose Jesus, then you must surrender your life to have His New Life. By accepting the sacrifice of His Life, you give your life to Him. It is Biblical – a life for a life. But today, we do not take such things literally blinded by new age grace that paints a portrait of a weak God with an “if-you-can’t-beat-them-join-them” mentality. God is not weak and He will not be mocked. The Grace of God given through Jesus Christ is sufficient for every sin that you will ever commit. Acceptance of His Life means that we must surrender our life. The blood of the Old Testament represented a binding covenant between two parties. (Exodus 24:7-8) The blood marked the believer bringing salvation to his household. (Exodus 12:13) This Old Testament blood came from animals representing the ultimate sacrifice that was coming – Jesus Christ. Those who believed God and awaited the Messiah used this blood for the remission of sin. Now the Blood of Jesus has sealed the deal. We are Children of God for the asking. But those who ask must want a new life rather than sticking with their old one. There is Power in the Blood for a believer. It offers grace to those who want to be in covenant with the Lord. The Blood of Jesus Christ is your life source. You cannot ignore it. You cannot dilute it. You cannot take it for granted either. Salvation is literally a life for a life.

Matthew 26:27-28 (NLT)
And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.”

The Holy Spirit is the spiritual brain inside of us. The Blood is our life source. It flows through our veins which is what makes us identifiable as Children of God like DNA identifies our parents. As believers, Jesus must be our source of life. Our son just underwent a bone marrow transplant. There are two forms of this treatment – autologous and allogeneic. An autologous transplant is when blood cells are harvested from the recipient’s body. After high doses of chemotherapy kill all bone marrow, the stem cells are reintroduced to the body. As they begin to engraft, the body slowly recovers and the cancer cells are removed completely. An allogeneic transplant is a little different. Same process but the cells come from a donor with the same blood type. The risk is greater in this form of transplant because the body sometimes rejects the donor cells because it can tell that they are foreign. This makes the allogeneic a more dangerous procedure with greater risks. Salvation is a full blood transfusion of sorts. We make a commitment to give Jesus Christ our sin-filled life marked by death to accept His Life so we can have the new life that God has promised. However, His Ways are not like our ways and so on. Our sinful nature rejects the transformation because it requires its death. We struggle between Light and darkness. A successful bone marrow transplant is marked by engrafting of new cells to facilitate the production of more healthy cells. The Blood of Jesus allows seeds of righteousness to prosper by faith into the new life promised as we become a new creation. It is not always an easy process. But maybe just maybe if we started talking about the Blood of Jesus more than people would not forget that this a life for a life choice that requires a change from the inside out. The Body of Christ would become healthy and whole flourishing in the Peace and Joy of Jesus rather than falling apart all around us. It is all about the Blood.

Luke 22:43-46 (NLT)
Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.”

I wonder if the disciples noticed the droplets of blood on their Lord’s face that night. It says that it was “great drops of blood”. When I read this, it makes me wonder if Jesus is not saying the same thing to us His Body – the church. “Why are you sleeping?” Have we forgotten His Sacrifice? Are we unconcerned of the price? Have we lost sight of the Blood? This is His Warning to us today – “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.” The enemy wants us to forget the Blood of Jesus Christ. He doesn’t want us to honor the Lord’s sacrifice and give Him our life. It is detrimental to the devil’s cause. He cannot touch God’s Children. The Blood of Jesus renders him powerless in your life. He is reduced to a roaring, toothless and clawless lion. You are protected by the Blood. Your household is covered by the Blood. If your church is not preaching, teaching, singing and promoting the Blood of Jesus, it’s time to make a move. You promised a life for a life when you asked the Lord to save you. His Blood became your life source in that moment. It is your salvation. It is your deliverance. It is your healing. It is your protection. The Blood marks you as Child of God rendering satan powerless in your life. The enemy wants to steal your stuff, kill you and destroy your family and would be successful except for the Blood of Jesus. Yes, it’s all about the Blood! Remember the Blood today. Plead it over you, your family and your household. Never go anywhere or do anything without it. You are a Child of God because of Jesus Christ. You owe Him your life so give it to Him. “Oh precious is the flow that makes me white as snow, no other fount I know, nothing but the Blood of Jesus!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
