The New England Patriots wrapped up the preseason finale with a 16-13 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night. Patriots rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played the entire game and both Aaron Dobson and newly acquired tight end Tim Wright saw action in the loss.
The Patriots sat mostly all their starters as head coach Bill Belichick wanted to take an extensive look at some of the players on the bubble. There wasn’t much excitement offensively as both defenses played well. Garoppolo was able to drive the team down the field for a couple of scores, but overall showed exactly why he is a rookie in his first start as an NFL quarterback. The lone touchdown for the Patriots came on a 33-yard pass to Dobson early in the second quarter to put the Patriots up 7-3.
The Giants scored on their next possession on a 1-yard run to put the Giants up 10-7 late in the half. A couple of field goals by Stephen Gostkowski gave the Patriots a 13-10 lead, but the Giants were able to tie the game on a 45-yard field goal by Brandon McManus and later took the lead and eventually won the game on 37-yard field goal by Josh Brown.
Overall Garoppolo was just okay. He completed 22 of 42 passes for 284 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He took a couple of sacks and miscommunicated with receivers on a couple of third down plays. Now Belichick will be presented with the task of cutting the 75-man roster down to 53 by Saturday.
One of the bright spots in the game was the return and play of Aaron Dobson. The second-year wide receiver caught three passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. It was Dobson’s first live action of the preseason. Defensively defensive ends Jake Bequette and rookie Zach Moore each recorded a sack as they both made their statements in making the team.
