Notes From Virginia Tech's second scrimmage

Saturday the Virginia Tech football team held its second full-on scrimmage at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. David Wilson was the offensive star, while cornerback Kyle Fuller's reaching the endzone on a 94-yard fumble return highlighted the defense.

Notes:
Quarterback Logan Thomas was 7-of-15 for 73 yards with a touchdown, but added a late interception when he was picked off by Eddie Whitley.

Thomas' backup Mark Leal was 8-of-13 for 72 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while third-string signal caller Ju-Ju Clayton was 5-10 for 76 yards.

Former Blacksburg Bruin Joey Phillips led all receivers with three catches for 44 yards and a score, while five other Hokies recorded two receptions.

Wilson rushed for 94 yards on nine carries, including a 40-yard burst against the second-team defense.

The first-team defense was solid, allowing just one touchdown in three positions against the first-team offense, stopping the offense on a fourth down and intercepting a pass in the other two.

The kicking game was a bit of a mixed bag Saturday. Starter Cody Journell connected on attempts from 25 and 40 yards out, but missing badly on a 45-yarder, and had another kick blocked by Jayron Hosley.

This was the final Virginia Tech scrimmage open to the public. The Hokies will hold their final overall scrimmage on Wednesday.
