It's no secret that food prices are on the rise and the recent drought in the Midwest has exacerbated the problem, in fact some economists predict this year could see as bad a situation as the food crisis of 1988. With budgets stretched to the limits already this is bad news, but never fear as Bountiful Baskets , an all volunteer organization, offers some relief to the pocket book. For a low buy-in price one receives two baskets full of produce, one filled with fruit and one with veggies. The types of produce vary each time and there are other offers as well, such as bread, honey, and all organic with separate pricing. Visited the Surprise, AZ location and found the volunteers to be cheerful and helpful, the produce was fresh and added a healthy component to meals for a couple weeks after. Hit their website for information on signing up, location and times, setting up an account, and payment methods. This is too good a deal to pass up.

The old rusty grill just ain't what she used to be...

Big box stores run by corporate headquarters are pushing the grills into a corner to make way for giant inflatable Jack o' lanterns and Styrofoam tombstones. This is good news for anyone searching for a replacement (or second) grill or smoker. Check for closeouts and deals on all grilling equipment from gas grills to “Kiss the Cook” aprons.

Don't cover that grill yet

Labor Day has typically been the death knell for summer, but here in Arizona we're in the shank of the season and there is nonstop grilling in the future. Though there are plenty of grilling days ahead there's no reason not to fire up Ol' Smoky on Labor Day and smoke some ribs, roast ears of corn (perhaps from the Bountiful Basket) -- maybe even toss on some slices of fresh pineapple for dessert, or follow up with some chilled watermelon. Don't forget a nice cold beer ( ) to help the celebration, but do grill and drink responsibly!
