Note to tardy boss: Man sacked after note to his tardy boss goes viral

A note to a tardy boss landed one man into the unemployment line, sacked for hand-writing a note and taping it to the door of a BP gas station in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

CNN on April 1 reported on the note, left by gas station clerk Joe Blumm for his manager, who was supposed to relieve Blumm in the morning after working an overnight shift.

The note read:

Hey boss, learn to be on time or at least communicate when you are going to be late. +1 hour with no phone call is unacceptable. As you can see, the doors are locked. I went home. Fire me if you must, but realize I walked out due to YOUR negligence.

Blumm, who had worked at the BP for three years, said he had asked his manager to please no longer schedule him on overnight shifts, but that his manager refused to work with him. After working another all-nighter, and waiting over an hour for his manager to show, Blumm locked up and skedaddled.

He scrawled an impromptu note and taped it up to the window, appropriately, right near the “Help Wanted” sign that was hanging there.

“After being stuck there for over an hour with no contact from the person supposed to replace me, I was at my breaking point,” said the 27-year-old.

MichiganLive reports:

[Blumm] claims it was the third time the boss had been significantly late in recent days, including the day before he locked up. He was supposed to get off third shift at 6:30 a.m. Thursday and he stayed until nearly 8 a.m.

Blumm said he never wanted this story to blow up, but away it went, exploding online after someone posted a photo of the note on Reddit.

“I don't really have much of an online presence. I don't have a Facebook page or anything like that,” Blumm said.

He does now.

Of the attention, Blumm said: “All of a sudden, you thought you had a snow ball and dropped it at the top of the hill and you look down at the bottom and then there’s an avalanche,” adding that he thinks his story “struck a chord with a lot of disgruntled, low-paid employees who get the short end of the stick.”

Blumm, who is now doing the job-hunt thing, said: “Hopefully, with all the publicity that could be a reality. I would love to have a different job, something a little bit higher paying I would hope.”

According to kfor.com, “Blumm’s manager admits she was late but argues that he never called her or anyone else before leaving the store.”
