As far as movie theaters go, the Cinefamily Silent Movie Theater in Hollywood is the #1 stop-shop for all films independent. Located on the busy street of Fairfax, this little gem is hidden in a fern covered small strip mall across the street from Fairfax high school. Blink once and you’ll miss this quaint venue on your way to the Grove.
Cinefamily is a non-profit organization that shows a variety of movies from documentaries to Sundance selections to animation showcases. Memberships (tax-deductible donations) are needed for entries into shows. Memberships range from a $100 three month membership to a VIP $5,000 year membership. Each has its own set of perks, including free admissions to Cinefamily shows, entries to secret shows with Q&As, free concessions, recognition on the donor wall, discounts on private rentals and much more.
Arrive early to get seats in the “Sofa Section” and enjoy the underground hip hop music played with clips of vintage movies. Metered street parking is available and after 5pm Monday through Friday, free parking is available across the street at the high school. Cupcakes and cookies are special treats you can buy from the concession stand and tote bags and t-shirts are available as well.
Renting out this theater is available for your personal film or even a wedding. The Spanish-style patio outback is used for holding receptions for special Q&A’s and is a perfect gathering place after your event.
Next time you’re in the area, keep your eyes out for this small, unique theater.
