Not too late to support troops with round of golf this Labor Day

Still looking for something to do this Labor Day? It’s not too late to join Patriot Golf Day at Los Angeles area golf clubs.

Local golf clubs are working with PGA, USGA and Play Golf America to donate $1 from each golfer’s greens fees to The Folds of Honor Foundation. The nonprofit founded by a major in the Air National Guard awards secondary educational scholarships to spouses and children of service members killed or disabled as a result of serving their country.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, over 220,000 women have served in the Middle East since 2001, more than 600 women were injured and 140 have died in Iraq alone.

Since its inception in 2007, Patriot Golf Day has raised $2 million and awarded 550 postsecondary scholarships in the last two years. This year, The Folds of Honor Foundation (which organizes the event) is hoping to raise more with 5,000 participating golf courses.

Additionally, if you are a female veteran and aren’t all that interested in golf, you might want to check out the second CalVet Women Veterans Conference Sept. 11-12 at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel to network and learn about employment and health care.
