Not-so-bad Lieutenant: 12 people want comfortable Lt. Gov seat including Metcalfe

This Tuesday the 18th is a big day for Pennsylvania politics: there are some major primaries in both the Republican and Democrat parties. Everyone's talking about the Sestak-Specter debacle and the governor's race (on the Democrat's side) looks to be pretty heated as well.

Did you know there are twelve people eyeing the seat for Lieutenant Governor, too? It's a comfortable seat that gets you $147,000 a year and a mansion in Lebanon County. Here's the kicker: You don't gotta do much besides win.

"It's reasonably high-profile, it pays well, and you don't have any real responsibility," says G. Terry Madonna, the oft-quoted pollster and political analyst at Franklin and Marshall College

To some Pennsylvanians, that describes the bulk of political positions in this State. This race for the same position that Robert Guillaume ended up working his way up to from being a butler on the show "Benson" is not without it's interesting tales, though.

The Philadelphia Inquirer's "Harrisburg bureau" (picture a hamster running in a wheel, with the state of newspapers these days) completely glossed over one of the candidates in the field of nine Republicans seeking the seat:

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe.

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe is someone who you could call interesting and be accused of making the understatement of the year. Metcalfe is the person in the State Assembly that is drafting a very Arizona-esque anti-illegal immigration bill.

Hands down, this man should be Lieutenant Governor. Not only is he a big proponent of limited government and localizing public education, he wants to keep our State from becoming another California in the next 10-15 years.

Now, a guy like this wouldn't have too much to do as the Governor's right hand man. As aforementioned, Lieutenants don't do much in this State and it's a rarity that Governors here have health problems. It would be nice to see Metcalfe take Tuesday's primary and come to Harrisburg in November.

It just sucks that Metcalfe's chances are as unknown as his candidacy and equally as unknown as the fact that there's an election for Lieutenant Governor.
