Not guilty verdict delivered in alleged gay bashing

Two Bassi brothers of Richmond, BC have been found not guilty of an alleged gay bashing attack. The brothers were charged in a June 2010 attack on two Vancouver men outside their Keefer Street neighbourhood. Ravinder and Parminder Bassi were found not guilty when the judge could not prove without a reasonable doubt that the Bassi pair was responsible for the attack. Victims Peter Regier and David Holtzman encountered a man urinating on their property and upon confrontation were attacked and subjected to homophobic slurs on the night of the incident.

Video surveillance of the incident was released following the attack and the Bassi brothers were arrested a few weeks later as suspects.

Regier was treated at hospital for head wounds requiring stitches while Holtzman suffered a temporary visual loss as a result of the attack.

In the time since the attack and as no direct result of the attack, David Holtzman passed away as a result of a heart attack while vacationing in Palm Springs, California in April 2012. Holtzman is remembered as a beloved community advocate, passionate volunteer, respected leader and advocate for anti-bullying and those people living with HIV AIDS.
