On Monday, a Portage County, Wis., man, who is accused of beating his dog to death with a hammer, pleaded not guilty to the resulting charge, reported ABC 9 News.

Cody Phillips is facing a felony charge for mistreatment of an animal resulting in death; Phillips allegedly bludgeoned his dog, named "Clyde," to death with a hammer on Jan. 19 because the dog had defecated, on more than one occasion, inside of Phillip's trailer home.

After the alleged attack, a responding deputy discovered the deceased dog in a snow bank - the severe wounds on the dog suggested that the dog had been struck multiple times. According to the complaint, Clyde's jaw was broken and there was blood coming out of the dog's ears.

The deputy noted that Phillips stated that he was "sick of dealing with it every day," in reference to the dog.

Prosecutors contend that Phillips blamed the dog for his wife's recent filing for a divorce
