Los Angeles, Calif. - With the news reports doing what they do, reporting anything and everything that comes into the news room. There are a lot of different versions of the story right now, but the facts that we do know is that a gunman dressed in camo came into the unsecured area of Terminal 3 at LAX, and began shooting at TSA agents there. He is alleged to have used a rifle of some type, that from photos appears to be some type of AR15 rifle. There are now reports that the suspect detained after suffering from gunshot wounds he sustained when he got into a shootout with a police office. A TSA agent is also reported to have died.
What is troubling for many in the gun community is that California is supposed to be one of the safest states, according the the Brady Campaign. The ban assault weapons, restrict magazine capacity and everyone must pass a background check. Their report can be found here. California is lauded as the number one state in terms of "common sense" gun control, scoring 81/100 points.
So many now are asking, how something like this could happen in a state that has so many restrictions on firearms. The answer is much clearer than many think. Criminals do not follow the laws. The suspect in this case already broke several other laws, so why would anyone think that he would be stopped by a gun law. There is nothing stopping people like this for committing these crimes.
This shooting, while tragic is looking like a colossal failure for gun control being able to stop a shooting from happening. In the coming days and weeks will be pushing for tighter gun control, there will probably be a bill in California to ban all semi-automatic rifles. There will a push at the national level for stricter laws. Sen. Dianne Feinstein will go back on TV, showing off the guns on a table that are illegal to have in DC anyway.
This shooting was stopped by none other than someone else with a gun. In this instance it was a police officer with a gun. Had this not been in California, he could have very well been stopped by an armed citizen, but in California getting a license to carry is close to impossible, so people must rely on the police to protect them.
There will no doubt be damage control by the Brady Campaign in the coming days, trying to show that the suspect skirted the state laws. They will have to show people that they laws they have pushed for have done something, but right now to those of us that work every day for gun rights, they are the ones standing there in front of the camera's with egg on their face. Their model for the rest of the nation has just shown everyone that gun control is not effective in stopping a shooting of this sort. This all appears to be a very inconvenient truth for gun control now.
