NOT dreaming of a white, red, green, or gold Christmas...

Maybe you thought "White Christmas" was huge among the December holiday hits, but do you know about "Blue Christmas"? It's a Christmas song composed by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson in 1948. Johnson was one of Hayes's chief musical collaborators.

Hayes, a New Yorker, was a songwriter, composer, author, guitarist, and contact man for Dawn Music. "Blue Christmas," written when he was 42, is probably his best-known song. His other popular songs include "Yesterday's Kisses," "Whittlin'," "Got a Ring Around Rosie's Finger," "Who Shot the Hole in My Sombrero?" and "Hillbilly Rock." A holiday classic, usually performed in country or rock style, "Blue Christmas" is a story of unrequited love during the Christmas season. It has given rise to a popular trend in the 1990s, and after, to providing lonely or grieving people with companionship and peace during the winter holidays.

Lyrics: Blue Christmas, B. Hayes & J. W. Johnson, 1948

  • I'll have a blue Christmas without you;
  •
I'll be so blue thinking about you.

  • Decorations of red

  • On a green Christmas tree

  • Won't mean a thing if

  • You're not here with me.
  •

I'll have a blue Christmas, that's certain;

  • And when that blue heartache starts hurting,

  • You'll be doing all right

  • With your Christmas of white,

  • But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas.
