Not at a brewery? Check out an ale house

So you're a craft beer entusiast and a brewery is not nearby, but the craving for craft beer is still there. What to do? Ale houses to the rescue! Ale houses are establishments that sell local and regional craft beers directly from the breweries themselves. The ale houses usually have some great food too.

One of the first and biggest in the area is Ashley's, which has two locations in Ann Arbor, Mich. and Westland, Mich. Ashley's of Ann Arbor will have 40-50 different craft beers on tap, most local, but they come from all over the world. The Westland location will have about 30 on tap. Both also offer superb food menus and beer samplers in case you cannot make up your mind.

Ashley's also has many craft beer events such as Tap Takeovers and Brewery Showdowns. The Tap takeover is when a brewery (or its representatives) will be onsite and Ashley's will feature several beers from only that brewery. The customer can ask questions about the beers, their availability, and anything else you can come up with.

A Brewery Showdown is when two breweries come into Ashley's and actually use the customers' opinions to see who has the better craft beer lineup. Ashley's updates their website regularly when the next big event is upcoming.

Some other ale houses in the metro Detroit area include Uptown Grille Restaurant in Commerce, Mich., Rub BBQ Pub in Detroit, Mich. and Warren, Mich., Foran's Grand Trunk Pub in Detroit, Mich., and Tap in Detroit, Mich. There are dozens more in the area, so please post and share any craft beer ale houses that you are familiar with.
