The New York Times named Nosara on their list of the 45 best places to go in 2012. Nosara offers the traveler an interesting mix of what much of Costa Rica is like, remote and accessible, basic and grand, for athletes and people that just want to relax. Located in Guanacaste on the Nicoya Peninsula, Nosara is part of what is termed the “Gold Coast” on the Northern Pacific Ocean.
Nosara is very ecologically sound and the roads to it are not paved all of the way. The residents like it that way and have fought hard to keep the roads unpaved. This keeps people that don’t really want to experience Nosara away. There is an airport here that is serviced by Nature Air. Additionally, big hotels are not present on the beach. Beautiful boutique hotels are present. Likewise, you won’t find chain restaurants here, but secluded little places with excellent food as well as bars with live music.
The New York Times article cites the fact that Nosara “has become the ideal spot to learn to surf”. That is true as there are a variety of surf companies in Nosara that meet the needs of every level of surfer. But it is a great spot for those who aren’t into surfing as well. Nosara is also home to the internationally respected Nosara Yoga Institute, where many visitors come to learn more about yoga or become certified yoga instructors. Public classes cost only $10. a lesson and are offered in both English and Spanish.
You can also visit the nearby Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, which was created to protect one of the world's most important nesting beaches of the Olive Ridley marine turtle. Many visitors to Nosara also come to just unwind and enjoy strolling on the beautiful beach.
I recommend you follow the New York Times list of places to visit in 2012 and make Nosara part of your travel plans. While you are here, you may also wish to visit other equally beautiful places in Costa Rica as well.
