The Norwegian team of Tora Berger, Tiril Eckhoff, Ole Einar Björndalen, and Emil Hegle Svendsen dominated the Biathlon Mixed Relay today with a time of 1:09:17. Their skiing was fast and their shooting was strong, requiring only two spare rounds.

The Czech Republic finished 32.6 second behind to win the Silver. The Czechs used seven spare rounds. Italy came in 58.2 seconds behind for Bronze and used six spare rounds.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen made Olympic history by winning his 13th Winter Olympics medal. He unsuccessfully chased the medal in several previous events, but finally caught it today. This makes him the winningest Winter Olympian ever. The previous record was held by another Norwegian, Bjorn Daehlie, a cross-country skier who won 12 medals total, eight of them Gold.

Team USA finished ninth. Their time was 3:03.1. Only Estonia’s shooting was worse than the US team.

This is the first time the Mixed Relay, a team of both men and women, has been held at the Winter Olympics. It consists of two 7.5 kilometer legs for the men and two 6 kilometer legs for the women. Each athlete must shoot five targets four times during their leg.
