On February 21st human sexuality professor J. Michael Bailey held an afterschool discussion that culminated in an on-stage live sex act. The topic of the demonstration was kinky sex and female orgasm; professor Bailey meant to prove that female orgasm and g-spot ejaculation do indeed exist. Professor Bailey's friends Faith Croll, 25, and fiance Jim Marcus, 44, engaged in a live sex-toy demonstration where Marcus brought Croll to orgasm using a sex toy.
The demonstration caused a nationwide uproar leading Professor Bailey to ultimately apologize for the act saying "I regret the effect that this has had on Northwestern University’s reputation, and I regret upsetting so many people in this particular manner. I apologize.” However he also stood by his position that the demonstration was educational and that there was no reason that he shouldn't have been able to show it, especially since it was after class hours, and he had warned his students multiple times that the demonstration would be explicit.
Northwestern University has announced that it will be cancelling the popular Human Sexuality class for the 2011-2012 school year. In a statement made to Star magazine Alan Cubbage, vice president of university relations said, “Courses in human sexuality are offered in a variety of academic departments in other universities, and Northwestern is reviewing how such a course best fits into the University’s curriculum.” He did not directly link the decision to cancel the course to the controversial demonstration.
Professor Bailey will remain on faculty but will be teaching other courses.
What do you think? Should the university cancel its human sexuality class because of the sex-toy demonstration? What does this say about our society?
