Spurred on by scoring of guard Chelsea Roberts and the rebounding of forward Trudy Armstead, the No. 4 Northwestern State Lady Demons earned their bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament by upsetting the No. 2 Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks by the score of 62-44 in the final of the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas on Sunday, March 16, 2014.
Roberts was 6-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line; scoring 16 points, with Armstead contributing 12 and Janelle Perez adding 10.
Armstead was a monster under the baskets, pulling down 13 rebounds, with 12 of them coming on the defensive end of the court.
The 6-1 senior from Dallas, Texas shot 5-of-9 from the field and was a prefect 2-of-2 from the line.
The Ladyjacks of SFA never seriously threatened the Lady Demons, with NSU leading by as much as 20 points at the end of the game.
Shooting was a factor in the game with NSU leading SFA in field goals (45.1%-32.7%), three pointers (41.2%-11.1%) and free throws (69.2%-66.7%).
The Lady Demons held the advantage, 32-28 in scoring in the paint, and bench points (16-9).
With the win, the Lady Demons will find on Monday, March 17 where they will be heading for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
SFA, on the other hand, will have to wait and see if they secure an invitation to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) or the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).
Northwestern State takes a 21-12 record into the NCAA Tournament while SFA posted a 20-12 record.
