Jesse Eugene Morris and his wife Amber Leard-Morris were arrested late Friday night after deputies from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office discovered an injured black Labrador retriever mix hidden in a closet in the couple's Green Street home in Fort Walton Beach reported nfwdailynews.com.

A witness notified authorities after hearing a dog yelping and whining.

When authorities arrived to investigate the report, Jesse Morris, 32, told the deputies he had given the dog to his father. After questioning Amber Morris, 25, who told a conflicting story stating the dog had fled the home three days earlier, authorities searched the home for the dog.

The dog named Sheba was found locked in a closet with face, neck, and foot injuries. She could not walk and cried out as her neck was touched. A van from the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society picked her up, and she is being treated by the organization's vet. Sheba's condition is not known.

In the front yard, authorities found a bloodied piece of lumber.

The couple have been charged with felony animal cruelty and several other offenses including giving false statements.

Get well Sheba.
