Northeast Ohio's Past Comes to Life at Cleveland Metroparks Garfield Park

Northeast Ohio is rich in fascinating history that often gets overlooked. Cleveland Metroparks presents a series of four living history programs - "Personalities of the Past" on Saturdays, March 3, 10, 24 and 31 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Garfield Park Nature Center.

Historical Interpreter Foster Brown reveals local history through his alter-egos. Each week, historic characters such as Serge the Voyageur, Digger Gallagher the Canaler, the Quarryman, and Steely Stan the Iron Man will depict a fascinating era of Northeast Ohio history. These family presentations are filled with learning, music, stories, laughter, and plenty of audience participation.

Serge the Voyageur

Saturday, March 3

2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Serge the Voyageur vividly brings to life these paddle men of the North Country who canoed, sang and carried trade goods and fur throughout the Great Lakes region. Hear how paddle men journeyed through mosquito-infested trails with heavy packs of fur on their back. Enjoy singing and fiddle music, too.

Digger Gallagher the Canaler

Saturday, March 10

2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Digger Gallagher the Canaler explains life of the canal worker who dug the Ohio & Erie Canal and how they saw the canal era thrive and bring great prosperity to Ohio. Be ready to sing and join in educational fun.

The Quarryman

Saturday, March 24

2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

The Quarryman reveals stories of immigrants who moved to Ohio to work in the sandstone quarries throughout Greater Cleveland. Learn about the life of these men who labored in these dangerous quarries and find out where the sandstone went after it was quarried. Bring your strong arms and singing voice.

Steely Stan the Iron Man

Saturday, March 31

2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Steely Stan explains the process of making steel and shares the journey natural resources such as iron ore, coal, and limestone take to make steel. Songs and lots of audience participation are used to explain this amazing industry.

Registration is required for each program. Space is limited.

Garfield Park Nature Center is located off Mill Creek Lane, off the Broadway Avenue entrance of Garfield Park Reservation in Garfield Heights.
