A lot of celebrating took place at Spiegelburg Stadium as North Medford won the Southwest Conference title with a 14-10 win over the Roseburg Indians.
The Black Tornado struggled against Roseburg on the way to an undefeated conference record, something head coach Mike Mitchell admitted was unexpected. Mitchell said "I knew we were going to be an improved team. I won't lie to you,I never thought we would go undefeated in conference play."
In the first quarter Roseburg took an early lead, as they took the opening kickoff and drove downfield scoring on a 5 yard run by Cody Walker.
North Medford scored mid-way through the second quarter when Nick Janakes found room down the right sideline, scoring from 14 yard out. The extra point attempt was no good, although the miss didn't make a difference later in the game.
Following a Roseburg field goal as time ran out to end the first half, North Medford scored in the third quarter as Ty Fowler passed to Tristen Holmes for a 76 yard touchdown. Fowler then passed to Janakes for a two point conversion making the score 14-10 and close the scoring for both teams for the night. Fowler's touchdown pass was his only one of the night after lighting up South Medford the week before.
After the game Mitchell said, "It's obvious our quarterback didn't have a great game. But, if we are going to be a winning team, we need to be able to overcome that and we did that tonight."
Mitchell called the game "a good old-fashioned defensive game.", the type game he indicated he liked to see.
Having won the conference title North Medford will have a bye this week, then began play in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 8th against a yet to be named opponent.
