North Korea is known for secrecy and propaganda but reports are emerging that indicates the country’s citizens may be resorting to cannibalism as a way to survive the “Hidden Famine.” According to Yahoo News, some people may be murdering their children in order to eat them.
An independent reporting agency, The Asia Press, which focuses on news in Asia, commissioned independent reporters to investigate and released its findings in The Sunday Times. Here is an excerpt from one of the reports:
“The source said: "While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: 'We have meat.'
But his wife, suspicious, notified the Ministry of Public Security, which led to the discovery of part of their children's bodies under the eaves."
Due to the secretive nature of North Korea, getting confirmation of these reports may be difficult. However, Asia Press has been working with independent, citizen reporters in the famine-stricken country for the last year and considers the reports credible.
Floods and storms devastated the country in 2012 to the point they nearly accepted assistance from South Korea, something the prideful northerners try to avoid at all costs. The Asia Press puts the death toll at nearly 10,000 over the last year due to what they call the “Hidden Famine.”
