North Korea is urging foreign embassies to consider evacuating Pyongyang due to rising tensions on the Korean peninsula, reports the Voice of America. This latest threat adds a new layer of concerns felt around the world.
Russia was encouraged to evacuate their people from North Korea due to “the increasing threat from the United States,” according to RT, Russia’s international news outlet. BBC is reporting that British diplomats were encouraged to leave as well.
Kim Jong-un – leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) – is a young, untested, new ruler, having assumed his position when his father passed. Various analysts have pointed out that Jong-un is untested. He is a bit of a loose canon in so far as no one knows how far he will take things. Analysts have stated it is unsure if he is trying to get his own people rallied up or if he is making serious threats.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) is full of rhetoric and propaganda. It calls the United States hypocrites and states that the United States and South Korea are propagating the situation. The KCNA has printed a statement from the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) which states:
“South Korea and waters around it are turning into places for display of various types of nuclear strike means of the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces and a dangerous hotbed of a nuclear war in the true sense of the word … never had the whole Korean Peninsula been exposed to such danger of a nuclear war as today … We formally inform the White House and Pentagon that the ever-escalating U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK and its reckless nuclear threat will be smashed by the strong will of all the united service personnel and people and cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear strike means of the DPRK and that the merciless operation of its revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified. The U.S. had better ponder over the prevailing grave situation.”
Jong-un threats however are akin to those of the little boy who cried wolf. Even the White House has admitted they are unsure of Jong-un. Speaking about an attack during a press briefing, White House Spokesman Jay Carney said, “"We would not be surprised to see them take such an action."
The US Department of State has issued travel warnings for North Korea. We do not maintain diplomatic or consular relations with North Korea.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will raise the National Terrorists Alert System (NTAS) level if a credible threat is perceived. Despite North Korea’s threats and actions, there is currently no active alert here in the United States.
