North Dakota winter survival tips for your marriage

Historically speaking, North Dakota winters are generally long, cold, and bleak. Many people in this region face the annual challenge of staying upbeat amidst the flying snow, freezing temperatures, and brutal winds.

Keep the cold from seeping into the depths of your marriage by enjoying these fun winter activities with your spouse:

1. Go sledding or ice skating. Somewhere deep down, there is an inner child just waiting to break free. Embrace the season while simultaneously having fun with your spouse. There are several good sledding hills and ice skating rinks located throughout the Bismarck area. Go to the Bismarck Parks and Recreation web site to find out more. Once on the Parks and Rec home page, choose “Facilities” on the menu bar at the top and then click on “Skating and Sledding.”

2. Read a book together. On days that are too cold for even the toughest to endure, stay indoors, wrap up in a warm blanket, and read a book aloud with your spouse. Not only does this provide quality time and interaction, but it also provides a good topic for future discussions.

3. Play games. Whether you break out the old Sorry! or Battleship games or challenge your spouse to a tennis match on the Wii, games get your mind and/or body moving which provides a little lift to a gloomy mood. Make it a social event by inviting friends or family to join in the fun.

If all else fails and you or your spouse are still suffering from warm weather withdrawal, consider flying south for a little fun in the sun.

I enjoy your articles, Sandy. I'll stick with Texas, but your suggestions made it sound fun to live in North Dakota. Emily Aikman
