A retired widow in Cherokee County, North Carolina was a recent victim of a home invasion. Thankfully, she wasn’t home when the intruder broke in, trashed her home, and then stole a shotgun, cell phone and medication. However, two days later, on Tuesday, March 5, the burglar returned to her home, only this time she was home, but she was also armed. She tells what happened in a video interview with WRCB.
Sue Johnson heard a knock at the door, but the man standing at the door was 26-year-old Nathaniel Leatherwood, the burglar who had broken into her home only days before. He says he was there to apologize, but that story is somewhat questionable, considering the fact that he was also carrying a three foot long wooden stick.
Johnson calmly pulled her handgun from her pocket, pointed it at him, called the sheriff’s office and told the burglar, “They're going to come pick you up. I'm not going to let this happen to an old, retired lady who lives alone.”
Sheriff Keith Lovin stated that he was relieved to find Johnson unharmed when he arrived. In fact, he hugged her neck and told her that she was his hero. Lovin had taught a gun safety class only a few weeks prior at Johnson’s church. Lovin stated that he feels citizens sometimes just get complacent and that regardless of the situation, whether it be a home invasion or a natural disaster, that all citizens should be prepared.
Johnson agrees:
You need to be taught to shoot and have something in your house to protect yourself .
This is yet another story where a gun was used in self-defense, but no shots were ever even fired. Because of this, it will likely be left out of self-defense statistics, thus swaying those statistics towards an anti-gun agenda.
