If you are in the greater southeast of the USA, one great day stop is to Stone Mountain. It’s about 75 miles north of Charlotte. Do not confuse this with the “other” Stone Mountain in Atlanta. Although they resemble each other, from the top of this one, you’ll get great views of what is called the Piedmont. A 200 ft waterfall will greet you as well.
You’ll gain 1,000 feet in the day. Rock climbers know about this mecca of big wall climbing in the area. The route to the top is well marked and not too strenuous. You will be going mostly up but there are a few downs. If you plan to big wall it, you can friction climb on the huge runouts. Use Great White Way. It’s a 3-pitch route at a 5.9. Doable for most.
It’s a good 4+ mile hike to get from the picnic basket crowd to get to the hunk of granite. Stone Mountain State Park hosts this attraction. Be prepared to pay a small admission.
