If you are a Raleigh-area home schooler, studying our state's history can be easily supplemented with a drive down town.  The North Carolina Museum of History is located in downtown Raleigh on East Edenton Street - around the corner from the State Capitol building and The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.  A one-day trip in to town can give your students a real hands-on experience on our state's history.

At the Museum of History, admission is free and you can plan your tip during one of the museum's Family Programs and have your children participate in some arts and crafts that are native to our state.  Some current exhibits on display at the museum include:  Knights of the Black Flag where students will learn about our state's pirate legacy;  In Search of a New Deal: Images of North Carolina 1935-1941 is a traveling exhibit of the Security Farm Administration that showcases photographs from rural life in Depression-era North Carolina;  and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Once through touring the museum, you and your family can take a short walk over to the State Capitol Building which is also located on East Edenton Street..  Admission is free and there are self-guided tours Monday - Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.    Educational resources can be downloaded from the website to enhance your touring experience.  Tours of the Executive Mansion must be arranged ahead of time.

While touring the history museum and the capitol can make for a pretty full day, there is still plenty that you can see and do while in Raleigh.  Click here for a listing of other historical sites and monuments.   Another great resource to complete your study on North Carolina is the Raleigh Heritage Trail which takes  you through ten historic locations in Raleigh and students can even get a Heritage Trail Passport to showcase all that they learned!

Doing a major unit study on our state does not merely have to be done by a book.  Sometimes a short, thirty-minute drive can give you a glimpse of our state history as no book can.
