In October, based on a tip from the health department, Animal Control Office Carrie Loholdt arrived at the South State Street, one-bedroom home to find 31 Labrador retrievers living in substandard and filthy conditions.
The officer described finding some of the dogs living in feces and urine filled cages with no dog bedding or water available. Half of the dogs were under six-months of age; two of the adult Labs were pregnant. According to Officer Loholdt:
"They turned their house into a puppy mill set-up."
The puppies were being sold for as much as $1,500 each.
The dogs were full of fleas and had to be treated for yeast infections. The couple surrendered the dogs.
The next court appearance is Jan. 7.
