Crystal Palace Baltimore's official website reports that the newly formed second division league will be named the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Avid soccer fans will remember the NASL that boasted teams in the United States and Canada from 1968 to 1984, attracting star players such as Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Johan Cruyff to the North American continent.
The newly appointed president of NASL, LLC, Selby Wellman, said that the name of the new league pays respect to those who pioneered professional soccer in North America, and he intends to offer an elite brand of soccer to its fans and partners.
The NASL is currently made up of nine teams, and the league has submitted an application to the United States Soccer Federation for sanctioning as a Division II Men's Outdoor Professional League.
