Norse drop A-Sun opener at Jacksonville

The Northern Kentucky Women's basketball team was in action on Monday at Jacksonville, Fla., for the first Atlantic Sun Conference game of the season and it didn't go as planned as they lost 65-60.

Kayla Thacker and Tiara Hopper both had big A-Sun debuts as they led the Norse (3-7, 0-1 A-Sun) with 16 points each and had seven and eight rebounds respectively. Christine Roush contributed an all around performance of six points, six rebounds and six assists.

Tracie Sneed led the way for the Dolphins (5-7, 1-0) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Jade Cargill added 12 points while Queen Alford scored 11 and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.

The Norse would hold the lead for a majority of the opening eight minutes of the game and at one point held a six point lead. The Dolphins took the lead back with a 3-pointer by Ciara McLee and would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the half. The Norse did tie it with 1:21 in the first on a Melody Doss 3-point play, but two free-throws by Sneed put Jacksonville up 33-31 at the half.

In the second half the Dolphins built a 10 point lead and controlled the first 12 minutes by going on a 19-9 run. The Norse would cut that lead to three on three separate occasions with the last coming on a layup by Kaitlyn Gerrety with five seconds left. Sneed finished off the Norse at the free throw line to grow the lead to five and make it a 65-60 final.

The Norse will return to action on Wednesday as they stay in Jacksonville for a contest with the North Florida Ospreys (5-7, 1-0) with tip-off set for 5:00 P.M.
