Norse crushed by Florida Gulf Coast

Northern Kentucky had a rough finish to its Florida road trip as they were beaten handily at Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday 73-54.

During the two game trip to the Sunshine State, the Norse have been outscored 144-113 (4-11, 2-5 Atlantic Sun). NKU has now lost four of its last five games.

The Norse were led by Eshaunte Jones who scored 22 points off the bench thanks to five 3-pointers and also grabbed seven rebounds. Ernest Watson picked up a double-double in the loss as he finished with 12 points and ten rebounds.

Florida Gulf Coast (13-8, 5-3) got a huge performance from Sherwood Brown who knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 29 points and ten rebounds. Christophe Varidel added four 3-pointers of his own for the Eagles.

The Eagles took out their frustration on the visiting Norse as they used a big first half to snap a two game losing streak. In that half they shot 62.5 percent including 7-of-13 from 3-point range to build a 20 point lead at halftime.

The Norse fell behind 8-0 to start the game and never led at any point. The closest they would in the second half was 13.

NKU returns home for a showdown with Mercer on Jan. 24. The Bears (12-8, 5-2) are coming off a 82-74 win over USC Upstate and have won three of their last four and six of their last eight.
