The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team put on a defensive clinic at home on Saturday against Lipscomb as they doubled up the Bisons 66-33.
Lipscomb (2-13, 1-4 Atlantic Sun) shot just 20.8 percent for the game and turned the ball over 21 times. The Norse (6-8, 3-2) also had three blocks and eight steals as they won their third straight game and are now 5-1 at the Bank of Kentucky Center this year. The 33 points are a season low for any NKU opponent this season.
Kayla Thacker and Ellen Holton led all scorers with 13 points and Rianna Gayheart and Melody Doss each added nine off the bench for the Norse. Christine Roush turned in an all around performance with seven points, five assists and five rebounds. Hannah Phillips led the Bisons with eight points and Jess Reece added six.
Scoring was hard to come by in the opening minutes of the game as the two teams combined to miss the first 11 shots. Kaitlyn Gerrety finally started the scoring just over three minutes in and Lipscomb followed with shortly after with a pair of free throws to get on the board.
The two teams would continue to go back and forth over the next five minutes, but the Norse were able to cling to an 11-10 lead. NKU extended its lead on four straight layups including two straight by Doss to make it 19-10.
A 3-pointer by Phillips cut the lead to six, but it was right back to nine when Gayheart knocked down a three of her own. NKU scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 37-22 into the intermission.
The second half started quickly for NKU as it tallied the first 13 points before Lipscomb scored at the 13:23 mark. The Norse outscored the Bisons 29-11 in the second half as Lipscomb made just four field goals in 27 attempts.
The Norse return to the road as they head to Ft. Myers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast (12-5, 5-0) on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Eagles are coming off a record setting performance against East Tennessee State as they set the NCAA record for most 3-pointers in a Division I game with 22.
