I’ve taken about 2 dozen cruises over the years. Cruising is a great way to get to your adventures. There is nothing like having your “necessities” in one place. The tours are first class or you can wing it on your own with a local tacxi. No packing and unpacking to catch a train or load up a rental car. But there is a bug out there that can ruin you dream vacation. It’s the so called “norovirus.” The virus is highly contagious even though the effects seem to pass after just a few days of misery. Not a fun way to have to spend precious vacation days.
Last week, two Princess ships were infected. The Crown Princess reported over 100 sick passengers and crew; the Ruby Princess reported that nearly 400 suffered. The Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas also reported the illness. The virus has been traveling on ships for several years and the CDC in Atlanta has been working overtime to control it.
The symptoms are periods of gastrointestinal distress. You will be quarantined for 3 days in your cabin, so plan on watching several movies in the supine position. A secret to preventing the spread is frequent hand sanitizing. Most ships have dispensers at many locations on the ship. Diligent lines require all passengers to use them before returning back on the ship. Passengers need to be reminded constantly to apply cleaners just before entering the restaurants. In buffet areas, germs can be transferred when passengers grab food and put it back when they change their mind. Either tongs should be used or attendants should hand portions out.
Another safe practice is to use tissues to open doors when leaving common restrooms. The virus is easily transferred off doorknobs. Another good idea is to not shake hands. A simple “fist bump” should be used. With a little attention the norovirus can be sent packing.
Carpe Diem,
Rick
