The anticipation is finally over for Norfolk Public Schools teachers and administration. The long summer break of 2013 is over, and the business of teaching and learning starts Tuesday after Labor Day. NPS Administration along with its many partners, shared a heartfelt back to school rally at the Norfolk Scope Arena for every member of Norfolk Public Schools faculty and staff. Each elementary, middle and high school, was represented . Employees wore shirts with their school name displayed in bold color.
The atmosphere was buzzing with friends and collegues, reconnecting after the summer. Many employees received new positions, and transfers to new schools.
As Elizabeth Mather, the Mistress of Ceremony stood at the podium a silence came over the Scope, just like students in school getting ready for a lesson. Mather was the first to instill the importance of going back to school for Norfolk's students. She shared how she related to her children, and the importance of the teacher/parent relationships in Norfolk schools, the pros and cons. Mather kept the crowd engaged, with door prizes, then the speakers of the day took the stage.
Dr Kirk T Houston explained the significance of working together as a team because without the team collaborating and working together there would be no success. All teachers, and staff are all on the same team for our children to be a success. Yes, there will be challenges in all divisions from administration, to principals, teachers and all staff. Houston says we must devise strategies, for the road ahead, and put ourselves in the right position. Lastly as the driven force behind the education process we all must control our attitude. What type of attitude will you have, positive or negative. Norfolk's students and parents are counting on all staff to have the right attitude, to heighten the learning process.
Dr. Samuel King New Superintendent from the Georgia School System spoke to the staff, on the strategies to get the Norfolk Schools on the right track.
Several Strategies Discusssed
- Maximize Potential for each student through academics
- Must compete with students of the world
- Establish Parameters
- Every student will start at the base line, and work to get to the top
Strategic plans for 100% success is at hand, quotes Dr. King. These strategies along with many more will catapult Norfolk to the cornerstone of the community.
The last speaker of the morning Dr.Calvin Mackie, gave a heartfelt speech about the way to success. First of all Dr. Mackie touched on the subject of saying Thank You, Excuse Me, our children don't hear this enough, and the need is there. We must make sure our children finish what they start. We must listen to them. Mackie says it is time for all hands on deck. There is a child in India studying by candle light, to get the best education. The child is not worrying about what Miley Cyrus is doing, but is using the resources available to them to put themselves in the forefront of learning. The children of Norfolk must have the same determination to succeed in life and it starts with Norfolk Public Schools, parents, guardians, care-takers, and the community.
