Norfolk County beaches closed by contamination

High bacteria counts have closed many Norfolk County beaches this week.

Among the recently closed beaches are Smith Beach in Braintree, Black Rock and Sandy Beach in Cohasset, and Wallaston Beach in Quincy.

Quincy’s Nickerson beach is also closed after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health found a bacteria level nearly 40 times the legal limit.

The state and federal beaches act, both enacted in 2000, require that public and semi-public beaches be monitored for bacterial contamination in the water during the summer season.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health offers water quality updates on its website.
