The Norcross Blue Devils visited the Parkview Panthers on Friday night for a GHSA non-region Week 3 matchup between two teams that lost their opening games, Norcross to Washington, the nation’s No. 1 team, by a 55-0 count in a nationally televised ESPN game, and Parkview to a much improved Peachtree Ridge, 28-14. When it was over, the Blue Devils had evened their record at 1-1, while the Panthers had dropped their second straight despite another solid effort against a good opponent to fall to 0-2.
The Panther defense did a good job, holding the Blue Devils offense to 21 points, but the offense couldn’t find an answer to the Norcross D. Norcross held a 7-0 advantage at the half, and then increased it to 21-0 after three. Parkview got on the board with 3:13 remaining in the game.
Norcross was led by running back Josh Boyd with two touchdowns and 116 yards on 14 carries, while quarterback A.J. Bush, the top rated uncommitted QB in the state, was 11 of 18 passing for 152 yards. Four-star recruit Myles Autry added 57 yards, 30 rushing and 27 receiving, and also had a 23-yard punt return in the win. Chris Herndon had four catches for 68 yards, while Clinton Lynch totaled 62 yards on four receptions and scored a TD.
Panther quarterback Jack Chambers, who gave up a pair of pick-sixes in the Peachtree Ridge loss, didn’t even attempt a pass in the first half against the Devils, and ended up 3-for-5 for 46 yards and a touchdown on the night. Justin Rosser carried the load for the Parkview attack, rushing 16 times for 79 yards, while Jeremy Lacey made a 27-yard TD catch for the only Panther score of the game.
Two seniors on their way to the state of Tennessee led their respective teams in tackles. UT commitment Kevin Mouhon, the No. 4 rated ILB in the state, had 10 tackles for Norcross, while Vanderbilt bound Bryce Lewis tallied 10 tackles for Parkview.
Both teams open region play next week. Norcross will be home against North Gwinnett (2-0) in the Examiner Game of the Week, while Parkview will be on the road to take on Grayson (0-2).
