Wednesday, the federal government announced that they would shut down offices in the Washington D.C. area in anticipation of a winter storm that is headed toward the North East, according to the Associated Press and ABC News; up to 10 inches of snow is expected in the Washington D.C. area on Wednesday. Some parts of the city are expecting up to a foot of snow from this storm.
Approximately 1,300 airline flights have also been cancelled at Dulles and Reagan airports on Wednesday.
The storm started early Wednesday and it is expected to be the worst storm of the season. The snow is wet and heavy, and as a result thousands of people are already without power.
The storm has been moving quickly from the Midwest over the last few days, and it has now joined another storm that has formed off the coast of Virginia. Winter storm warnings have been issued in 19 states so far and it spans from Montana to Virginia. High winds and power outages are expected in addition to the heavy snow.
Chris Vaccaro, a weather service spokesman said Wednesday:
One storm is passing the baton to another storm, and it all adds up to the biggest storm in more than two years for the Washington area.
Approximately 90,000 people are without power in Virginia. Power outages are also expected in parts of North Carolina, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Maryland.
Parts of Chicago received 10 inches of snow on Tuesday, and parts of Cincinnati had three to seven inches.
