Driving around East L.A. you will most certainly see hundreds of pho restaurants and it can be a bit intimidating. Sometimes it’s just helpful if someone could tell you exactly which one to go to and what to get.
Pho Huynh is one of those places you should hit up. They were featured on the Next Iron Chef last year when Chefs Jose Garces and Dominque Crenn had to make the perfect bowl of pho. They soon found out that it was not easy to create the perfect bowl of pho. Though it may look like a simple bowl of broth and noodles, it certainly takes more expertise and knowledge.
Pho Huynh serves both northern and southern style pho. Watch the video (on the bottom left column) and you will see some of those differences.
The most popular pho is the northern Vietnamese pho bac, which is rare filet mignon that has taken a bit of a beating from the back of a cleaver before put into the piping hot broth in a metal bowl. All the regular condiments come with it, but it also has the addition of thinly julienned ginger. As far as the extras are concerned, you don’t have to stop there with just the filet mignon, you can also add extra meats to your pho like tendon, brisket or rare beef.
As for drinks, two of their top sellers are the delicious and refreshing Soda Chanh (lemon juice in soda, but it tastes like lime and many recipes call for lime) and the Café Den Da (iced coffee) to go with your pho.
