Nonsensical shutdown

Here is a case in point for the U.S. Congress being nonsensical.

Congress, led by House Republicans closed the government because why? Before answering that, consider what are not the reasons:

1. Not because it will save the government money in the short run because it will do just the opposite.
2. Not because it is good for the economy.
3. Not because Republicans have answers to increasing demand for government services and assistance.
4. Not because Republican budget and finance policies will create an improved environment for business.

So what are the reasons why government is shut down. It is because Republicans do not want to use the legislative process to improve the Affordable Care Act because they don’t believe that government should be helping to insure 50 million Americans. They don’t believe in Social Security and Medicare either. They want to return to the days of Warren H. Harding and the Depression era because, after all, capitalists were in charge.

In the meantime, Congress took a lot of heat for furloughing 800,000 workers and now they are going to guarantee their salaries once they return to work. That means they have given 800,000 workers a free vacation during which Americans are denied a return on their cost. That isn’t old fashioned Republican economics. In fact, is more like the economics of Karl Marx.

WASHINGTON — The House has passed a bill to give 800,000 furloughed federal workers retroactive pay once the government reopens.

The House passed the bill in a rare Saturday session. The vote was 407-0.

The Senate was expected to OK it as well, but the timing is unclear.

The White House backs the legislation.”
