Charitable Auto Resources, Inc. (CARS) is a company that manages vehicle donation programs to raise funds supporting non-profit organizations and their mission. CARS has been successful by maintaining its focus on making the donation process simple and convenient for donors, even when the federal government complicated tax savings from charitable vehicle donations.

Several years ago, revenue garnered by nonprofits from these programs declined following changes to the tax laws: A donor could no longer set their own value for the donated vehicle; instead donors were required to set the charitable contribution amount to the actual resell amount (if the sale exceeded $500). CARS devoted time to educating its nonprofit clients and potential donors in order to maximize program revenue despite its decline in appeal for taxpayers.

Despite this decline, are vehicle donations still a viable fundraising solution? Bonna Kol, president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, would say yes. "Through our auto donation program, we are able to transform something that is no longer wanted into help for those in need.” Ms. Kol adds "This assistance may be in the form of emergency food or shelter, family counseling, or support for a senior living alone, services all designed to help people achieve self-sufficiency."

CARS features a robust website and detailed reporting for its nonprofit clients as well as a reference for potential vehicle donors, with advice on tax deductions, the value of cause support and how to donate more than just an automobile: On behalf of its nonprofit clients, CARS has sold boats, trucks, airplanes, motorcycles, even farm equipment. Visit CARS to learn more and provide your constituents with additional ways to support the causes they embrace.
